About the Roc City Skatepark.
Here’s the deal.
The activity toward realizing RocCity Skatepark started when a fundraiser and father of four kids who participate in progression-oriented sports (1) Decided he was frustrated with paying a small fortune to take them to private parks and (2) Realized that most cities across the country have free, public skateparks.
The poor-dad mentioned above had never participated in any of these sports, so went to the experts at Krudco Skateshop, who proceeded to pull in bmx riders. The combined expertise and knowledge proved to work well together and progress toward realizing the largest public skatepark in the United States right here in Rochester has moved quickly ever since.
Who is the Citizens Planning Group?
The Citizens Planning Group is really an organic group that grows and changes as the group needs expertise, knowledge, networks, information, access, and resources. Realizing visions from the grassroots brings a unique set of challenges and opportunities!

Who will use the skatepark?
This town has a thriving skateboarding and BMX community. Yet would you believe there’s not a single outdoor skatepark in the City of Rochester? Roc City Skatepark promises to be a well-lit, safe, outdoor, community center for the entire family open to all ages and levels of skating and riding abilities. And access will be totally free.How will Roc City Skatepark make money?
Hosting skateboarding and BMX competitions at the park can garner big-name sponsorships and draw big-time crowds. Not only is a little competition healthy, it’s also a potential money-maker—for the city as well as the skatepark.What does Roc City Skatepark mean for the City?
What good can a skatepark do for Rochester? The benefits of RCP abound. A park like this brings new life to the city after an economic downfall. It means essential tax and community revitalizations. And best of all, it means people young and old. People like skateboard and BMX enthusiasts from our community, as well as potential tourists from around the world.Who will own the park?
Once the RocCity Skatepark is built, it will be owned by the City of Rochester and the City of Rochester will hold the liability insurance and assist with the maintenance of the park.
Related to liability insurance, it is important to note two points. First, there has never been a successful lawsuit against a public or private skatepark. Second, skateparks are safer and less costly to insure than basketball courts, football fields, baseball fields (all of which have been built and owned by the City of Rochester).
Related to maintenance, the vision is to create a public-private partnership to maintain, sustain, and improve the RocCity Skatepark. These public-private partnerships are very common, and the Friends of Mount Hope Cemetery is an example from Rochester. Essentially, a group of volunteers work together to care for a publicly owned destination.
